Separar a ciência da política II

Porque é que o Presidente Obama decidiu atribuir fundos a uma linha de investigação que levanta graves problemas éticos e que se tem mostrado completamente inconsequente, pondo em risco as outras duas linhas de investigação no mesmo domínio desprovidas de complicações éticas e com resultados práticos muito mais avançados e prometedores? Ken Connor, no Town Hall, dá uma pista: «(...) Dr. Irving Weissman, Director of The Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, provides us with a hint. In a recent interview with NPR, he said, "It's not just stem cell research that's the issue here. It's the idea that you can impose a religious or a political or a moral ideology on the pursuit of what nature has." (...) Much of the scientific community today believe that there should be no restrictions of any kind placed on their "pursuit of science"—a pursuit conveniently defined by them. Religion, morality, law, pragmatism—nothing should constrain their right to do as they see fit. Unfortunately, too many people today are blinded by this rhetoric of "unbridled science." They fail to recognize that science needs and has always needed moral and political constraints. Consider the awful Dr. Mengele experiments on twins in Nazi Germany, the creation of two-headed dogs through grafting by a Soviet Union surgeon, the vivisections, amputations, and infections administered by the Japanese "Unit 731," or the Tuskegee study on syphilis in African-American men that prevented them from being treated for the disease. Without moral, religious, or political limits, there would be no grounds to prevent such atrocities. Society inevitably sets political and moral parameters for scientific research. This can take on many forms, including placing restrictions on specific forms of research or funding others. President Obama embarked down an unethical, unwise, and impractical road Monday. Let us hope that Congress has more sense when funding requests land on their desks.» No mesmo forum, Guy Benson analisa as consequências não divulgadas da decisão do Presidente Americano, nomeadamente a suspensão de fundos para a investigação em células estaminais adultas, e avança outra hipótese, relacionando esta decisão de Obama com outras anteriores, igualmente incompreensíveis, nomeadamente a obstinada e dolosa oposição à Born Alive Infant Protecion Act: «(...) Right after he told the country he supported for alternative, non-destructive stem cell research, Obama signed the actual order. Buried at the very bottom of the document was this line: “Executive Order 13435…is revoked.” That’s right, he abolished President Bush’s funding for the type of stem cell research upon which everyone could agree. Just like that. In my August 2008 column, I speculated as to why then-State Senator Obama had repeatedly opposed no-brainer, pro-life legislation that passed the US Congress without a single dissenting vote. I wrote, “[One] possibility is that Obama’s a hyper-partisan ideologue. The driving forces behind the Born Alive Infant Protection Act were pro-life groups that generally support Republicans. Perhaps Obama’s fierce partisanship and leftist ideology were simply too strong for him to stomach handing any conservative group a political victory. If this is the case, his vote was petty and appallingly callous. It also would entirely undermine the overarching message of his famous 2004 DNC speech in which he decried blue vs. red state polarization and embraced America in with a big, royal purple hug of bipartisanship and inclusion.” In the face of yet another grotesque Obama policy decision on the issue of life, famed bioethicist Wesley J. Smith pondered a similar question. On his blog, he wondered why on earth Obama would take the totally unnecessary action he did in undoing excutive order 13435. Smith’s conclusion: “I can think of only two reasons for this action…First, vindictiveness against all things "Bush" or policies considered by the Left to be "pro life;" and second, a desire to get the public to see unborn human life as a mere corn crop ripe for the harvest. So much for taking the politics out of science.” This decision by the president is hypocritical in the extreme, and demonstrates that Obama’s language about respect, inclusion, and unity are, in fact, just words. Regardless of one’s feelings on the separate issue of embryonic stem cell research, this narrow element of his executive order is an outrage, and “thoughtful and decent” people of all ideological backgrounds should urge the White House to follow the president’s own rhetoric by rejecting the imposition of leftist ideology at the expense good science.»

No dia em que a TSF volta às declarações do Cardeal Patriarca de Lisboa e às de Dom José Saraiva Martins nas quais ambos os prelados recomendam cautela às mulheres católicas que se pretendem casar com muçulmanos - divulgando a opinião de uma jornalista italiana raptada no Iraque em 2005, na qual a senhora, eventualmente vítima do Síndrome de Estocolmo, mas, seguramente, vítima dos habituais preconceitos anti-Igreja, que classifica as declarações dos prelados (tal como lhe foram apresentadas pelos jornalistas, o que pode explicar o disparate) como discriminatórias - tomo conhecimento de mais uma senhora ocidental em sarilhos. Esta senhora foi acusada de adultério por ter sido apanhada a beber um chá com um homem que não é seu familiar. O marido abriu o processo de divórcio, a senhora vai cumprir uma pena de prisão de 3 meses - resultado de uma misericordiosa comutação da pena original de 6 meses - e, após cumprimento da pena será repatriada, o que pode facilitar a previsível perda da tutela dos filhos que, de acordo com a lei islâmica, são propriedade dos progenitores de sexo masculino. Separar a ciência da política

Obama quer separar a política da ciência. Já o fez: a investigação em Células Estaminais Embrionárias Humanas, onde tem sido desenvolvida, tem dado maus resultados, tanto do ponto de vista da eficácia dos tratamentos, como ao nível dos efeitos secundários. Para além disso, ao canalizar fundos federais para este tipo de investigação, Obama pôs em risco outras linhas de investigação que já estão a dar resultados positivos, nomeadamente a investigação em Células Estaminais Adultas, a qual, para além do mais, não levanta qualquer tipo de problemas éticos, como se pode ler no texto de Michael Reagan na Town Hall, do qual destaco os seguintes trechos:

«(...) What most people are unaware of is that there are three types of stem cell research: there is embryonic stem cell research (ESC), there is induced pluripotent (IPSC) research, and adult stem cell research (ASC). When Barack Obama rescinded George Bush's ban on federal funding on certain types of embryonic stem cell research he also rescinded Bush's Executive Order 13435 which had provided federal funding for induced pluripotent stem cell research using harmless adult stem cells manipulated into mimicking embryonic stem cells without the risk ESC cells entail. This is where 72 different diseases are now being remedied or cured. (...) (...)I t is well known that lab animals given embryonic stem cells routinely develop tumors and other malignant growths that eventually kill them. There is a 100 percent mortality rate among lab animals that develop these tumors. That's why George Bush banned this lethal form of research that Barack Obama, who should have known better, has now legitimized by overturning this life-saving ban. The reason that major drug companies such as Merck and Pfizer are not funding ESC research is because they have seen the research and it scared the daylights out of them. They realized that if they injected ESC cells into human beings and like lab animals, they show signs of cancers or lesions or tumors there will be huge class action suits, because they would have ignored all of the available data in research that shows that that's exactly what will happen. (...)»

Problemas éticos que são hipocritamente descartados através da tal suposta separação entre ciência e política, como se a ciência - qualquer ciência, neste caso a embriologia - pudesse ser uma disciplina autónoma do saber humano e responder a todas as questões que se nos colocam na nossa passagem pela Terra e, muito em especial, às questões que se colocam aos próprios cientistas, as que emergem das suas investigações. Sobre esta matéria, ler o texto de Steve Chapman, também no Town Hall, cuja conclusão destaco:

«(...) He (o Presidente Obama) did, however, reject another option. "We will ensure," he said, "that our government never opens the door to the use of cloning for human reproduction. It is dangerous, profoundly wrong and has no place in our society, or any society."

Is that a scientific judgment? No, it's a philosophical one, reflecting Obama's moral values. Apparently, the folks in the white lab coats can't be relied on to answer all questions.

But this position is hard to square with his professed approach. On one hand, the president says his policy is "about letting scientists like those here today do their jobs, free from manipulation or coercion." On the other, he will use coercion to keep them from doing reproductive cloning.

What this mandate means is simple: It may be permissible for scientists to create cloned embryos and kill them. It's not permissible to create cloned embryos and let them live. Their cells may be used for our benefit, but not for their own.

There lies the reality of embryonic stem cell research: It turns incipient human beings into commodities to be exploited for the sake of people who are safely past that defenseless stage of their lives. It's a change that poses risks not just to days-old human embryos. The rest of us may one day reap important medical benefits from this research. But we may lose something even more vital.»

Uma separação cruenta e com tremendas consequências.

Siência progrecista

Obama aprova, Clinton aplaude e assegura que a investigação em embriões humanos será feita apenas em "embriões que não possam ser fertilizados". Para que conste: o entrevistador é médico e esteve para ser o General Surgeon - uma espécie de Director Geral da Saúde - e deixou Clinton repetir uma boa meia-dúzia de vezes que não havia nenhum problema em investigar em "embriões que não tenham sido e que não possam de modo algum ser fertilizados". Estas declarações vêm trazer um novo significado à expressão "guerras culturais" e ajudam a compreender a intenção do Presidente Obama quando disse pretender separar a política da ciência. Addendum: No Hot Air, o comentário a esta entrevista termina do seguinte modo: «If this is the level of scientific knowledge from the pro-abortion, pro-hEsc research Left, I don’t think they’ll be finding any stem cell advances regardless of whether they get federal funding. In fact, I’m not sure Clinton could find his rear end with both hands and a flashlight after watching this. Like Jill, I wonder whether Bill Clinton will oppose hEsc research funding when someone finally educates him on actual human biology. I won’t hold my breath.»

Prioridades

Se a celeridade na nomeação para os cargos de maior responsabilidade e poder na Administração americana for indício de alguma prioridade, então Obama está mais empenhado em constituir uma equipa para a Justiça que para o Tesouro. Para além de se constatar que os cargos mais importantes já estão preenchidos, pode-se também avaliar a direcção política que o Presidente pretende imprimir conhecendo os nomeados, como um anónimo americano - anónimo por medo de represálias - fez num texto publicado no Pajamas Media, cuja conclusão aqui deixo: «(...) In sum, President Obama has nominated individuals who are extremists on issues such as abortion, pornography, and euthanasia. He has nominated individuals who have demonstrated a palpable hatred for our military, whose members are fighting and dying to protect our freedom. He has nominated political partisans who helped provide pardons in exchange for political contributions and to secure votes, or who have chosen to represent terrorists trying to kill Americans. He has nominated individuals who want to disarm our military and intelligence services, and bring back the infamous days of the 1990s, when the Clinton Justice Department did everything it could to limit the effectiveness of our efforts against al-Qaeda.

There is no question that radical left-wing politics is going to take center stage in the policies of the Department of Justice over the next four years, to the detriment of all Americans and the well-being of our nation. As Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society has said, “We are on the brink of having the most Culture of Death, anti-family Justice Department ever.”»

Aborto por Indução do Parto

Este postal destina-se a apresentar a quem desconhece este procedimento o Aborto por Indução do Parto. Usa-se quando a destruição do feto in utero, por meios químicos ou cirúrgicos, já não é possível devido à avançada idade gestacional, no segundo e terceiro trimestres. O procedimento consiste, como o nome indica, na indução do parto por meios químicos. O bebé nasce na condição de prematuro e morre por omissão de cuidados. Assim, sem mais. Deixo o video no qual Jill Stanek, enfermeira, discute o procedimento após ter testemunhado no senado do estado do Illinois, durante o processo que levou à aprovação da Born Alive Infant Proteccion Act, lei contra a qual o actual presidente Barak Obama votou por diversas vezes no senado estadual.

A queda de um mito

Aos poucos, mas num curtíssimo intervalo de tempo, os mitos da melhor transição entre presidências, da Administração mais competente e do melhor presidente dos EUA parecem desmoronar-se.

Apesar do cansaço alegadamente acumulado devido a uma dedicação frenética à resolução dos problemas económicos e financeiros do USA - o qual foi apresentado como justificação para a desrespeitosa recepção ao primeiro-ministro inglês -, uma dos funções da competência directa e exclusiva da presidência, a constituição da equipa do Tesouro, parece estar a ser negligenciada. A esmagadora maioria dos lugares de topo no Tesouro americano estão por ocupar, após 4 meses de transição e mês e meio de exercício de funções.

E, ao que parece, não são apenas os cargos de topo que estão por preencher: o de secretária/o recepcionista/a também está vago. Addendum: mais nomeações falhadas.

A religião da justissa VI

De nada serviu a um dos homens e à septuagenária alegar que ela o havia amamentado, o que, aos olhos da mais respeitável jurisprudência islâmica sunita, corresponderia a ter laços de família, tornando lícito o convívio social entre ambos. Sem a existência de qualquer atenuante, eis a sentença:

• 40 chicotadas e quatro meses de prisão para a senhora de 75 anos e para o putativo enteado;
• 60 chicotadas e seis meses de prisão para o amigo do putativo enteado.

A religião da justissa V

Um tribunal afegão usou de prodigiosa clemência ao comutar em vinte anos de prisão a pena de morte por blasfémia a que um afegão foi condenado por ousar sugerir que ao direito dos homens à poligamia, sob a forma de poliginia, deveria corresponder igual direito às mulheres, sob a forma de poliandria, na base de uma suposta igualdade entre homem e mulher. Parece que ideia não agradou nem às autoridades religiosas, nem à polícia, nem aos juízes. Mas também, é mais ou menos tudo a mesma coisa... Uma amostra do que nos espera se não nos pusermos a pau, literalmente. Via Jihad Watch. Destaco o comentário ao seguinte trecho da notícia: «(...) Twenty-eight year-old Kambakhsh's troubles began in 1997, when he wrote in his blog that "extremist mullahs" had distorted the true meaning of Islam's holy book or Koran. (...)» «We hear that a lot. But Kambakhsh took two extra steps that self-styled reformer/apologists seldom if ever do: Criticizing specific Islamic teachings, and to a Muslim audience. If he kept it vague and sought a primarily non-Muslim audience, he might be on prime-time cable news instead of in an Afghan jail.»

A jihad no nosso seio

Um muçulmano inglês explica, calma e metodicamente, aos seu alunos (?) o objectivo do Islão - implementar um regime islâmico orientado pela charia - e os processos pelos quais esse objectivo pode ser alcançado: imposição por obra de uma potência externa, conversão dos ingleses ao Islão, golpe militar ou jihad a partir de dentro do Reino Unido, eventualmente apoiado por mujahedin vindos do exterior, como no Kosovo e na Bósnia. Como disse há dias, ninguém pode dizer que não sabia, que não se deu conta. Os jihadistas não fazem segredo das suas intenções, nem dos seus métodos. Os seus progressos, os retrocessos da civilização, são visíveis a cada dia. Quando fala do processo de implementação do domínio islâmico através de um golpe militar, o jihadista, Anjem Choudary de seu nome, refere que nos golpes de Medina e de Meca os muçulmanos triunfantes constituíam somente 10% da população daquelas cidades. Alguém sabe qual a percentagem de população muçulmana hoje no Reino Unido, na Holanda? E qual a percentagem de muçulmanos na polícia e no exército desses e de outro países europeus? Via Jihad Watch.

Eis um magnífico exemplo de Justissa a la Islam. Como bónus, assinale-se ainda o pormenor ilustrativo da importância da mulher no Islão: «(...) But the victim says she is entitled to blind Majid Movahedi in only one eye, because under Iranian law "each man is worth two women." (...)» Um primor. Em suma: as demonstrações de que o Islão é uma força essencialmente bárbara multiplicam-se, assim como as evidências de que o Islão alastra no Ocidente, perante a ignorância da maioria dos europeus e dos americanos e beneficiando do silêncio cúmplice dos media e das elites culturais e políticas. Que ninguém venha a dizer que não se deu conta da invasão e de que não tomou consciência da natureza essencialmente bárbara do Islão. Via Hot Air.

A propósito desta notícia, Robert Spencer escrever no Jihad Watch:

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences has determined that over ninety percent of Pakistani wives have been struck, beaten, or abused sexually — for offenses on the order of cooking an unsatisfactory meal. Others were punished for failing to give birth to a male child. Dominating their women by violence is a prerogative Muslim men cling to tenaciously. In Spring 2005, when the East African nation of Chad tried to institute a new family law that would outlaw wife beating, Muslim clerics led resistance to the measure as un-Islamic. Why do things like this happen? Because Islamic clerics worldwide have spoken approvingly of wife-beating. (...) (...) Muslim men bring this religiously sanctioned violence with them when they immigrate to the West, even to the United States. The prominent American Muslim leader Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, former president of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), has said that “in some cases a husband may use some light disciplinary action in order to correct the moral infraction of his wife…The Koran is very clear on this issue.” In 1984, Sheikh Yousef Qaradhawi, who is one of the most respected and influential Islamic clerics in the world, wrote: “If the husband senses that feelings of disobedience and rebelliousness are rising against him in his wife, he should try his best to rectify her attitude by kind words, gentle persuasion, and reasoning with her. If this is not helpful, he should sleep apart from her, trying to awaken her agreeable feminine nature so that serenity may be restored, and she may respond to him in a harmonious fashion. If this approach fails, it is permissible for him to beat her lightly with his hands, avoiding her face and other sensitive parts.” Why do they say such things? Because the permission to beat one’s wife is rooted in the Islamic holy book, the Qur'an, and Islamic tradition. The Qur'an says: “Men shall take full care of women with the bounties which God has bestowed more abundantly on the former than on the latter, and with what they may spend out of their possessions. And the righteous women are the truly devout ones, who guard the intimacy which God has [ordained to be] guarded. And as for those women whose ill-will you have reason to fear, admonish them [first]; then leave them alone in bed; then beat them…” (4:34) (...) (...) Mais mulheres em sarilhos. Estas não são ocidentais, mas os dramas de algumas foram vividos e tiveram a sua triste conclusão no Ocidente, que, muitas vezes, por um ignominioso pseudo-respeito pela diversidade cultural ou, simplesmente, por cobardia, as abandonou à sua sorte. Requiescam in pace.
