New Tunisian PM: "The liberation of Jerusalem starts here. I will be the sixth righteous caliph."

The English in this report is marginal, but the import is clear. The Righteous or Rightly Guided Caliphs were, according to Islamic tradition, the first four successors of Muhammad: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali Ibn Abi Talib. Then some add Hasan, Ali's son, or Umar II, who came slightly later. And Hamadi Jebali is apparently planning to be the sixth.

"Tunisia's new Prime minisiter's [sic]: "I am a Rightous Caliph, I see Signs from God." !!!," from All Voices, November 13
In a popular meeting in Sousse today, Hamadi Jebali of Enahdha party, certainly tunisian [sic] next prime minister in Tunisia, has announced that he and his party will be "the 6 th islamic Rightly Guided Caliphs", promising also that this tunisian [sic] Caliphate will, enlighten the worrld [sic], as did the Jasmine revolution!

The term Caliphate refers to the first system of government established in Islam and represented the political unity of the Muslim Ummah (community). Its head is the Caliph, a monarch, usually chosen among pious imams.

He also promised that Jerusalem will be freed from jewish [sic] occupation. The liberation process will start from the tunisian [sic] Caliphate! pointing [sic] to a palestenian [sic] guest woman present in the meeting: "our sister's presence is a divine sign from God. The liberation of jerusalem starts here. I will be the 6th Rightous [sic] Caliph"...

Egypt: Islamic supremacist presidential candidate vows to arrest bikini-wearing women if elected

Sharia Alert from Egypt: "Egyptian women fret as 'modesty' becomes election issue," by Joseph Mayton for The Media Line, November 14:
[...] And, freed from the strictures of the Mubarak era, politicians are pushing forward on an Islamic agenda.

“It’s so frustrating,” says Marwa, who told The Media Line that she wears the veil in part because her mother wants it and partly out of the conviction that “it was the right thing to do.” But at the same time she is critical of politicians “who would dare tell a woman what is appropriate. That is un-Islamic.”

The two are typical young Egyptian women, who participated in the January and February uprising that forced out president Hosni Mubarak and put the country on the path toward democracy. But with elections just two weeks away, they are lamenting how women are being left out of the dialogue and discussion of the future of the country.

“We were at the front of the protests, getting beaten and supporting the future of Egypt,” recalls Heba. But now, she says, “Women are not being heard from and this is causing a lot of frustration among myself and my friends who want the ability to choose our lives and what we do.”...

The controversy over the status of women in post-Mubarak Egypt came to a head at the start of November after Hazem Saleh Abu Ismail, a leading presidential candidate and Muslim cleric, gave two television interviews in which he outlined an Islamic future for the country that would impose Saudi Arabian-style dress and behavior on the public.

In an interview on the 90 Minutes television program, Abu Ismail said he supported what he called “Islamic dress” for women, meaning the hijab, or veil. Asked about what would happen to a woman wearing a bikini on the beach, he responded, “she would be arrested.”

Days later, he went on the Biladna Bil Masr program and lashed out at the show’s popular TV host, Reem Maged, and all other unveiled women in the country. He declared al-tabarouj (the failure to cover one’s hair and of wearing makeup) a “mortal sin” and said he would make such actions “criminal,” citing his interpretation of Islamic law.

He told Maged he wouldn’t have agreed to the interview at all because of her dress but said that in politics “things are different” and he has to meet with people from all walks of life. To underscore his point, a Facebook-based Salafist news outlet re-aired the interview with Maged’s head and face covered by a dark filter to “veil” her.

“I desire for you what I desire for my sister, and I admire your courage during the January revolution and I wish the next time we meet, things will be different,” Abu Ismail told his host inviting her to cover her hair....

In nearby Tunisia, which like Egypt has a largely secular elite, the moderately Islamist Ennahda Party won more than 40% of the vote for a constituent assembly last month, making it the dominant power in the country’s emerging democracy. In Egypt, 67% of those polled by the Pew Global Attitudes Project last April said the country’s laws should strictly follow the Quran's teachings. Another 27% said that they should follow the values and principles of Islam....

If elected, Abu Ismail has promised to apply Islamic law to other realms of Egyptians life, which would mean closing down casinos, outlawing the drinking alcohol in public, forcing Copts to pay a special tax for not converting, and punishing women who would wear “immodest” clothes.

That special tax would be the jizya, which the Qur'an says that dhimmis must pay "with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued" (9:29).

For now, it is an uphill battle against the conservatism that has risen in Egypt since July, when the Salafists – those who adhere to what they call a literal interpretation of the Qur’an – converged on Cairo’s Tahrir Square in the hundreds of thousands, demanding an Islamic state for Egypt. Women saw this as the beginning of the struggle for their rights.

For Marwa, Heba and other women in the country, it is a fight for women’s rights. “We must stand against this sort of thing, whether we are veiled or not,” says Heba, “because freedom of choice is important for Egypt’s future.”

"Progresso", ao estilo da "Primavera" Árabe

Mulheres egípcias, tratadas como camelos.
Amplify’d from www.jihadwatch.org

The above picture, taken at a recent protest in Egypt, has been making the rounds on various Arabic websites. Note the rope around the women, herding them like camels; note the man to the right holding the leash, walking them. I am told this is a common “precautionary measure” to keep women from mixing with men during protests.
Considering that certain Islamic texts describe females as “she-camels in heat,” or that it is traditional for some men to divorce their wives by saying “you are given free rein and unloosed like that camel,” or that Muslims are thought to have a mind-frame rooted in sand, camels, and ropes—this measure must surely seem natural.
At any rate, to those who think that history must always progress, take note: fifty years ago, the overwhelming majority of women in Egypt wore dresses, hair uncovered, and would never have condescended to being walked on a leash.
Such is “progress”—“Arab Spring” style.

Pave de Way Foundation

Egypt: Christian student murdered for refusing to remove crucifix

Ayman Nabil Labib, a 17-year-old Coptic Christian student, was murdered by Muslim classmates after refusing to remove a crucifix he was wearing, the Assyrian International News Agency is reporting.

The murder, which took place on October 16 in the central Egyptian town of Mallawi, took place after a teacher asked Labib to cover up a tattooed cross on his wrist. Labib refused, instead uncovering a cross necklace.

“The teacher nearly choked my son, and some Muslim students joined in the beating,” said Labib’s father.

“They beat my son so much in the classroom that he fled to the lavatory on the ground floor, but they followed him and continued their assault,” the victim’s mother added. “When one of the supervisors took him to his room, Ayman was still breathing. The ambulance transported him from there dead, one hour later.”

France: Muslims firebomb satirical magazine that featured Muhammad as "guest editor"

CharlieHebdoMuhammad.jpgFirebomb if you don't find this funny

How long is the West going to put up with this? There are two choices: stand up for the freedom of speech and prosecute the Islamic thugs who are trying to destroy it, either by violent or non-violent means; or surrender, and place Islam and Muslims beyond criticism, in which case their jihad and the spread of Sharia in the West will advance unimpeded.

"Satirical Magazine Is Firebombed in Paris," by David Jolly for the New York Times, November 2 (thanks to all who sent this in):

PARIS — The office of a French satirical magazine here was badly damaged by a firebomb early on Wednesday, the publisher said, after it published a spoof issue “guest edited” by the Prophet Muhammad to salute the victory of an Islamist party in Tunisian elections. The publication also said hackers disrupted its Web site.

The magazine, Charlie Hebdo, had announced a special issue for publication Wednesday, renamed “Charia Hebdo,” a play on the word in French for Shariah law.

The magazine’s publisher, who goes by the name of Charb, told Europe 1 radio that the police had called just before 5 a.m. to report a fire of criminal origin. News reports said that a Molotov cocktail was thrown through a window. The special edition was on its way to the newsstands, Charb said, and will appear as scheduled.

But, he added, “We are homeless and we have no way to put out the magazine. We hope this won’t be the last issue.”

“We can’t put out the magazine under these conditions,” he said. “The stocks are burned, smoke is everywhere, the paste-up board is unusable, everything is melted, there’s no more electricity.”

The magazine’s Web site was hacked earlier, but appeared to have been restored by early Wednesday.

Caustically ironic and vulgar, Charlie Hebdo prides itself on being offensive to virtually everyone. It has drawn the ire of Muslim activists before, including in 2006, after it republished cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that first appeared in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

Outside the magazine’s office, there were still traces of smoke, with huge piles of half-burned copies of the magazine heaped on the sidewalk. Inside, the office was darkened from smoke and melted computers spoke to the seriousness of the damage.
